An encounter during which the Patient is treated in a hospital but does not stay overnight. The patient may be assigned a bed during this time. A short stay is similar to an inpatient encounter except that inpatient encounters involve an overnight stay. A short stay differs from an outpatient encounter in that the patient is formally admitted and discharged, whereas an outpatient encounter does not involve an admission. An example of a short stay is a scheduled surgery where the patient arrives in the morning and leaves in the afternoon.
